Yesterday, the High Court released its decision on Stafford v Attorney General (the Nelson Tenths Case), marking a significant win for the Customary Owners of the Nelson Tenths area, including our Kurahaupō whānau. This judgment affirms our collective rights and is an important step towards settling the Nelson Tenths matters, which have been ongoing for decades.
While some details are yet to be decided by the Court, this is a meaningful victory for Uncle Rore Stafford on behalf of the Customary Owners (including Rangitāne members) that he represents, as well as Te Tauihu iwi and whānau generally.
Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō, who are an observer to the case on behalf of the Kurahaupō iwi, has provided a pānui that outlines the decision and next steps. We are sharing it with you here and will continue to update you as more information comes to hand.
