Te Tapuwaetahi o Rangitāne 20202020-02-25T14:04:55+13:00

EASTER WEEKEND  |  10-13 APRIL 2020  |  WAIRAU

Established in 2009, Te Tapuwaetahi o Rangitāne is a three-day festival celebrating all things Rangitāne. Previously known as the Rangitāne Ahurei, the name of the event was changed to Te Tapuwaetahi o Rangitāne in recognition of the whakatauki “Tapuwae tahi o Rangitāne-nui-a-rangi”, which speaks of the single footprint of great Rangitāne of the heavens.

It has been eight years since Rangitāne o Wairau hosted the festival and we are delighted for the opportunity to again showcase our people, our region and our rich history to whānau from the other three Rangitāne branches – Tāmaki-nui-a-Rua, Wairarapa and Manawatū.

Over the weekend, the four iwi will compete against each other in a variety of activities, including netball, basketball, touch rugby and kī-o-rahi. On Saturday night the Rangitāne Tū Mai Rā Awards dinner will be held at the Marlborough Convention Centre. This is a whānau-friendly event with a zone set out for tamariki and rangatahi to keep them entertained while the awards ceremony takes place.

Ngā ara hīkoi o Rangitāne o Wairau – Sunday’s hīkoi will be led by historian and Rangitāne trustee Dr Peter Meihana, and will visit sites such as 17 Valley, Rārangi, Wairau Pā and the Tauihu on Grove Road. For tamariki and rangatahi there will be an opportunity to go swimming at Stadium 2000 during the Wānanga Lecture Series on Sunday afternoon.

If you would like to participate in this event get your whānau together, fill in the registration forms and send them to Te Rūnanga a Rangitāne o Wairau by 10 March 2020. There will be an additional fee for registrations received after this date.

The sports will take place at Marlborough Boys’ College and St Mary’s School. Sports registrations close 22 March.

If you would like to nominate an iwi member for the Rangitāne Tū Mai Rā awards the categories are as follows: Outstanding Rangitāne Business; Rangitāne Contribution to the Arts; Rangitāne Rangatahi Leadership Award; Contribution to Māori Education; Rangitāne Sports Excellence and Achievements; Services and Contributions to Rangitāne Iwi – Te Kaihāpai-o-Iwi.  Awards Nominations forms must be received by 15 March.
